Biography


Laura Bell has recently completed a Bachelor of Music (Performance) with First Class Honours at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music studying with Hans-Dieter Michatz. As a part of this, Laura submitted her Honours thesis detailing the growth and promotion of historical performance in Sydney, and presented her first honours recital, including Chominciamento di gioia (anon), Sonate Metodiche 3 by Telemann, Trio in F by C.P.E Bach and Concerto in C minor (RV 441) by Vivaldi. Laura's final honours recital included contemporary works: Charavgi by Greek composer Calliope Tsoupaki, Chinesische Bilder by Isang Yun and Seascape by Fausto Romitelli for contrabass and amplification.

Throughout her time at the Conservatorium, Laura has been a grateful recipient of numerous grants and prizes including the Commonwealth Learning Scholarship, Joan and James McIIrath Armstrong Scholarship, the John Ellyard Memorial Scholarship, The Women’s College Music Scholarship, Margaret Henderson Donation Account Scholarship, Francis and Josephine Anderson Scholarship, Mary Patricia Bell Grant, Suzie Williams Prize and Basil and Muriel Hooper Memorial Scholarship.

She has been guest soloist for Penrith Symphony Orchestra performing Karl Jenkins’s Imagined Oceans, and was featured as part of the Pini, Hazelwood and Friends concert series playing Vivaldi. She is co-founder of Bellatrix Recorder Quartet and has regularly performed solo in and outside of Sydney. Laura now looks forward to performing throughout The Netherlands, with exciting projects being organised for 2009/2010.

Laura is a highly sought after teacher in both recorder and violin. She draws from a wide range of pedagogical devices used to best serve the individual student in an effective and fun manner. Her passion and energy for teaching has inspired her to write about the importance of music teachers as life-guides, and hence is determined to improve the standards of student-teachers worldwide.

Laura is currently undertaking a Master of Music at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag, The Netherlands. She would like to thank the Ian Potter Cultural Trust for their continuing support.
